A certain vowel button does not respond to typing, but vowel does pop uncontrollably when I hit other buttons
I don't know if you are serious, but you can pop a button off of the keyboard by sticking something under it and using it as a lever; I'd start by checking under the button body to see if there is something stuck and/or maybe wipe the area in with a q-tip dipped in water or alcohol. If that doesn't work, you could look and/or clean under some of the surrounding buttons. There are some other things that you can do that would probably fix it, but I've given you a place to start and I've got to go to bed, myself...

Peace Out;

Buy a new keyboard. They're less than $10 at www.livewarehouse.com

Good luck!

Most keyboards are wired in a matrix design (kind of like a chess board. The key will basically short a XY value that the keyboard controller will interpret. It's still probably a hardware failure, probably one of the keys is stuck internally. Replacement is probably the only option.

Most laptops accept an external mouse and keyboard, or you may have a USB port that could be used with a USB keyboard. Other than that, replace it (that part is probably not the most expensive piece of hardware in that laptop, but probably not very cheap either.) Labor to replace it would be fairly expensive too (at least compared to buying an external keyboard.)

And if you need an emergency, short-term solution; You could cut-n-paste a Word macro which would substitute the misbehaving key with a two or three key combo or a toolbar item; But then you'd have to do all of your typing in Word and you'd probably only want to use such a drastic measure, if you are flying coach on an international flight and there's no room for your external.

I forgot about the external option... if your laptop is always on the desk (you don't travel with it) you can simply buy a USB keyboard and a mouse, and do it that way. Much better then typing on a laptop keyboard anyway.

I'm bored, so I'm going to throw out another useless workaround that could help you on that international flight, perhaps it may help others, maybe somebody will see a way to do something someday, or it'll help me fill a couple of minutes without doing anything productive.

Another option would be to bring-up the Windows Character Map (Start/Run/charmap) and from there, you could copy and paste any Windows letter or symbol from any of your resident fonts into any Windows-based program.
