Unhappy Compaq laptop display

I have a Compaq Presario laptop which shows a series of vertical lines completely across the bottom half of the screen. (The top half is normal.) The computer works fine when usiing an external monitor, so I guess the video card is ok.

Does this sound like a defective display screen?

Basically yes. Either that or a broken wire on the ribbon feeding the screen.

Ouch! Sounds like a defective LCD to me (or, as trinitro mentioned, the ribbon cable.) Play around with the connections if you can get to them. Who knows? You may get lucky and it's only a bad connection. You could try reseating the vid card inside it, if you can get to it easily. If you can avoid buying parts, you'll save yourself a lot of money. LCD screens aren't cheap.
