Customer's Question, Win2000 or 98?
Ok. I have a customer that has an old Presario 166Mhz system with something like 64MB ram and a 5GB HD.
They are tired of it being slow and want to install 98 thinking it would be faster because it wouldn't require as many resources as 2000.
I agree that their system is kind of slow to be running 2000, but I can't see that 98 is going to make much of an improvement.
I suggested that more HD space might help since his is almost full, but I let them know that it would be a good idea to upgrade the system (pretty much completely).
So what this post is asking is,
Is win98 going to make any improvement?
They know 98 is not as stable but they are looking at system against OS.
I am leaving in about 3 hours to see them

I'm assuming this computer already has Win95 on it? I wouldn't think anything older than that, and obviously nothing newer. If so, the basic problem with upgrading to Win98 is that it is, more or less, useless. Depending on the version of Win95 (or whatever) installed, the only gains you would have would be USB support and some other hardware support, as well as memory handling and disk usage performance increases (but, not enough to make a difference.)
On the other hand, Win2k's minimum system requirements are as follows:
Computer/Processor - 133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU.
Memory - At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM; more memory generally improves responsiveness.
Hard Disk - 2 GB with 650 MB free space.
CPU Support - Windows 2000 Professional supports single and dual CPU systems.
Drive - CD-ROM or DVD drive.
Display - VGA or higher resolution monitor.
Keyboard Required.
So, you're really borderline on the requirements. However, Win2k handles memory and resources 10x better than Win95 or Win98. Win2k is not necessarily intended for home use. Win98 will provide better multimedia handling and support. It's a toss-up. Analyze the hardware, see what applications they are wanting to run (games? internet/e-mail? word processors? etc.) and go from there.
Good luck!

I uh sorry... forgot to state
They are running 2000, that is why they think it will run better if they drop down to 98.
Windows 98Se requirements are
486DX2-66Mhz
24MB Ram
210MB HD Free
So I guess 98 would run better, but I still cant see such a huge improvement for the time spent moving the data to 98.

Ah, if they already have 2k I would encourage them to upgrade the computer. You should be able to replace the CPU and upgrade the RAM fairly easily. With HD's as cheap as they are, might as well replace it too (saw one over at techbargains.com the other day - 30Gb for $25 AR.) For that matter, bare bones are so cheap, for less than $400 you could upgrade them to an XP. But, I wouldn't "down-grade" the OS to Win98, that's just a waste.
Good luck!

After spending 2 hours on it just to get on once and check the internet and then test with an extra hard drive, the customer decided to have me build a system.
I think that has to be the slowest system I have ever worked on.
(No per specs but for reality)
