mouse won't work

when I boot up I get a message that a ps2 mouse is not connected. I have an old 586 pc with win98 and use a serial mouse port. The mouse is actually a ps2 mouse with an adapter which converts it to a serial mouse. I checked mouse properties( there is an ! beside mouse and the properties state no drivers, does a mouse have to have a driver?
It's hard to manuover without a mouse
please help

If you have an adapter on the mouse to convert it to serial, then you shouldn't have a PS2 mouse in your DM. Try uninstalling the mouse and let windows redetect it.

Yes, most mouse need drivers, however Windows comes with generic drivers that will support most mouse (as well as drivers for most popular brands of mice.) Go to the manufacturer's website and see if there is an update to your drivers.

Good luck!
