Multimedia Card

Hi All Hope these questions haven't been asked here before... Two questions... (okay... maybe three...) 1) When I set up my wireless Router and the card/USB adapters, I left the security setting as the default password. How do I change it and what order do I do it in. I did manage to change the password on one of the computers once, but then couldn't access the router to change it there... Should I have just kept plodding [I](plodding is the appropriate word for how I work on a computer)[/I] forward? I am always afraid I'll get somewhere, totally screw things up and not be able to get back to where things were working... Security isn't an issue here (yet), but the thought of someone driving by with a laptop and accessing my hard drives because I'm using the default is a bit scary :eek: 2) How do I set up the network so that I can share files and peripherals like the printer and scanner? Both are connected to the prime computer although the scanner doesn't like XP, so I may put it back on the secondary if I ever get the network set up (there isn't anything else plugged/programmed into the 98SE USB). 3) Do I need to hard wire the prime computer to the router or can it all be done wireless? (went wireless so I wouldn't have to run ~75' of ethernet cable and drill a bunch of holes thru my floors/walls) Prime computer is a Compaq Presario (AMD processer), Windows XP Home, Secondary computer is a custom built PIII processor, Windows 98SE. Router is a Linksys Wireless Access with 4 port switch, 2.4GHz, 802.11b, Prime computer using a Linksys Wireless USB Network Adapter and the secondary has a Linksys wireless card installed. DSL phone connection to the internet. Do you need any other info? I can access the internet on both computers now, but just can't figure out how to configure the rest... Btw, I am a bit computer challenged, so would appreciate any responses in plain english - trying to figure out what all those computer acromyms stand for is as challenging to me as the actual set-up... :rolleyes: Thanks for your help Howie

Ok, so I just setup my first wireless network - not difficult, but not as easy as a wired network either. Everything's working fine - 2 PC's wired through the Speedstream 2624 4-port router/print server, and 2 laptops wireless connected through 1021 PCMCIA cards. Everything runs WinXP except 1 laptop (a really old one), which runs Win98SE, and ironically enough, works fine. The problem is the WinXP laptop - after about 5 minutes of being wirelessly connected, it disconnects and won't reconnect unless I do it manually. I've tried every setting in Network Connections (and the wireless adapter's settings in NC - as well as all the Advanced tabs I see.) I even disabled power options on the card, just to make sure it wasn't being powered-down. I've used Speedstreams setup to make sure all the software is installed correctly, etc. I've enabled WEP and all the settings are correct (it does connect, it just doesn't stay connected.) I checked the Speedstream website - not very helpful (go figure.) I haven't really done any other searching online though. It's not the setup in the router - remember, the other computer works fine and stays connected - this one connects, just doesn't stay connected. I'm thinking it may have something to do with DHCP release or XP policies (since this is a Pro setup - as are all of the computers with XP.) It's not a huge problem, I just don't want to have to reconnect the wireless LAN every time I use this laptop to connect - the idea of always-on is that I don't have to connect, I'm already connected. Of course, in the time it has taken me to write this, the laptop has stayed connected (probably 10 min overall). But, I'll post this anyway, just because I would like to know where this setting is and how to enable/disable it in the future (as wireless is getting so popular anyway.) Just a thought I had, I should probably check the MS Knowledge Base also, as I'm almost positive this is an XP setting somewhere. Thanks.
