What and how do I turn these off

The following programs are running in:

Start> Programs> Accessories> System>
Ms System Information> Software Environment> Running Tasks

What programs can I turn off and how do I go about doing it?
these are not showing in Msconfig.

Disable Nortan AV from the task bar OR from the Program menu. Most of the others are "necessary". Disabling them would either crash your computer or the module would restart when required (the reason they are not shown in Msconfig). The clew is "Operating System".

Kill.exe (was available at one time, from ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/) is a DOS Command Line Task Killer (if you care to experiment).

These are all needed files. The Norton Anti-virus is optional, if you don't mind having a virus or two. I recommend leaving them be.
