recovery

Hello
My daughter has a Dell desktop with win me and wants to clear out the clutter for her daughter's use. She has the disks for install, drivers and another dealing with miscellany, but can't find her recovery/refomat disk. Dell says it has none and one from someone else would not work re: licensing. We cannot find it retail. I believe Dell said the name of the recovery disk is 'resource'.
Any ideas? Dopes anyone have a retail disk?

The matter of transferring licenses to use programs not withstanding, you might find it on ebay.

Dell says..... one from someone else would not work re: licensing
This is built more on faith than reality.

Hope this helps.

hi peter,
about your recovery disk problem, unless there are things on there you are wanting to keep. you could always just blow it, reformat it, and do a clean install. nothing beats a clean fresh start.

Hi Tad
I'm not that well versed; could you be more specific.
I've been told w/o the recovery disk the machine could not be recovered and reformatted. We only have the install disk. Dell says we need the reource disk.

Exclamation

I am well experienced with Dell.
There is a resource CD that contains some of the drivers, user manuals, and also diagnostics. ALL DRIVERS AND MANUALS CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM support.dell.com!
Dell is still an honest company: they provide a windows installation cd, not a rip-off recovery thing (like HP, sony, etc.).
If using windows MilleniumEdition:
1. Power up and insert winMe cd
2. Press reset button on tower
3. "boot from CD" (not hard drive)
4. "start computer with CDROM support"
5. type FDISK at dos prompt
the goal is to delete ALL partitions, and create a new one. If you desire anything other than 1 (C, it is easy, and we can provide additonal details.
6. ESC fdisk when done, and reboot
7. Choose "boot from CD" and "start Windows Setup"
8. Windows setup is all relatively self-explanetory, it WILL PROVIDE A TOOL FOR FORMATTING THE DRIVE.
Advice: choose CUSTOM installation; edit the items it will install to eliminate excess useless feature and add all system tools and accessories for example.
9. The machine will require you to babysit it for any hour or more to reinstall all software in addition to windows, during which it will reboot several times.
10. When windows and all of the essentials are installed, run windows updates, and all other such updates. Cable/DSL is a big help with this.

If you run into trouble with "blue screen of death" because of a lousy Turtle BEach sound card for example,
there are methods to working around these difficulties.

green jacket,

Is there a provision for a non-destructive recovery in Dell as there is in HP?
