total shutdown

posted this problem before, and believe we have figured it out.as you all suggested, i removed the case cover, blew it out, the fan inside works, but was very dirty. overall the components were cleaner than i thought they would be. this helped, but did not fix it. i now have a small fan blowing into the case and this seems to help a lot but a total cure. win xp pro, compac 533 or so 184 mg ram. what do i do next?

I'm guessing you have PC100 or PC133 RAM - buy a 256Mb stick of it. 184Mb is not enough to run WinXP Pro stablely. If you can't reuse any of your other RAM with the 256Mb, then buy a 512Mb stick. In other words, 256 is ok, but you really need more than that with Pro.

You could also try a reinstall of WinXP, just to make sure there are no corrupt files - try a thorough ScanDisk to check the HD.

What power supply and setup do you have? With a 500Mhz+, you should have at least a 300W PS or better.

I think the RAM upgrade will help more than anything.
