laptop/audio
Now I can't figure out how to get the audio to work on this Dell. (Latitude CP M233ST). I have the tag number if this is needed, too.
I have the normal beeps, etc. but when I try to load Riven on the laptop it says no audio device. I've tried to manually load it, but not sure what's in the system. Apparently you really need to know what the hardware is before you can choose the correct one LOL. I just can't find that information.
Here's what I got off the spec sheet from Dell:
*audio controller: Crystal 4237B
*audio type: sound blaster pro-compatible voice and music functions
*Stereo conversion: 16-bit (analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog)
*FM music synthesizer: 20-voice, 72-operator
*Interfaces:
--Internal: ISA bus
--External: line-in/audio-in; microphone-in; headphones/speakers
*Controls: keycombinations, software application menus, speaker window in control panel or system setup program
Is this a software issue? I don't have any applications in control panel or in setup that handles volume controls. I also don't have the little speaker showing in the systray. I did at one time, but I don't think I've had it since I reinstalled Windows on this laptop.
Its not even finding any audio hardware when I have it search to add new hardware.

Well... to get started, go to control panel and Add/Remove programs and Windows Setup tab and then Multimedia. You'll need you win 98 disk. Tick Volume control (and most the others) to get audio software installed.
Post back what you get. It's liable to take off with just this, but you might need the Dell audio disk. And Dell laptops aren't known for great sound, so a set of headphones or speakers will likely be needed.

Its not in there - the volume control deal. That was the first place I checked: multimedia. I thought maybe I had removed it for some silly reason or other.
I'll check again though, but don't have a restore disk for this computer. I do have a copy of it burnt from the computer itself since they left a copy of it on the system when they delivered it.
I may be missing the audio driver stuff LOL. I purchased this computer off eBay a few years ago for my BIL since he was to be going overseas on a job. This way he could keep in touch with things at home. The job fell through due to the war breaking out and I ended up purchasing the computer back from him about a month later. I don't know if the restore disk actually came with the system, but according to the description on eBay it did. I am missing several pieces to the system as well. I'm assuming, only assuming that the disk was lost as well.

I found a driver for you over at DriverGuide.com. It says it's for a Crystal CD 4237B - try this link, but since it's a members site, you may have to sign-up first. It's free, etc.
Good luck!

I forgot that last night, well early this morning I ran the setup and restored Windows again. The option is available now for the volume control, but it is already checked.
I don't have the actual disk, nope. Such a bother too. I did download the audio driver from dell before restoring windows but that didn't help. Maybe I need to try it again?
I went ahead and just checked everything under multimedia and am now rebooting. I'll see what that does.

The volume control is listed under the entertainment section of the start menu bar but when I click on it nothing happens.
On this desktop I have a program called Voyetra. Do I need something along that line?
I'm also waiting on my password to download the driver from the site Brandon linked me.

One more suggestion...right click My Computer/properties/Device Manager tab. Sound Video and Game Controllers. Is there a ? or X for any items listed. Delete any that are showing a problem. What is listed?

here's the link to voyetra. it's software. If you can restore it, then i would delete it,uninstall all info to audio, and then reinstall the audio drivers.See what happens.

Dell crystal drivers:

They also have a program to check your current config on the same page.

Guys, please don't kill me. Two reasons: one I'm in the middle of defraging that drive since I've made so many changes its slow.
Also, I pulled out the copy of the restore disk I had made - guess what I think is on it...the drivers and the program.
I'll post back if that solves it after the defrag.
Sorry....

I really feel foolish LOL. I went into the bios/setup. I had some options there that I didn't have before. I guess the upgrade to the bios was a cool idea, but I didn't realize it would actually change my options (things I could control) I did notice that for the audio it showed disabled. Before, it never showed anything like that much less give me an option to change it.
Of course, after enabling it and rebooting it search for and found the hardware. Then it couldn't find the drivers. I used the drivers I had downloaded from Dell yesterday and now its working fine. Even have the speaker icon in systray.
I loaded my game and it runs fine - sounds yukky but that's why I have the headphones.
If I had just checked to see what was different in setup after upgrading the bios I could have saved us all a huge headache.
Thank you guys so much for your help! I now have a fan that runs and also sound!
Kay (losening the noose around here neck a little...)

I just hate it when we skip the obvious.
Don't feel foolish, you at least solved the problem.
To make you feel better:
years ago, i was working on a computer installing a new sound card. I couldn't get it to play for anything. I installed manually, i installed with the wizard, i changed every setting i could. After about an hour and a half, i went to the back of the machine to pull everything out and put the old card back in, and i saw that i didn't have the speakers plugged in! LOL....now that was embarrassing!
