Outlook and error Message
OK, I switched from Express to Outlook at home on my PC. XP Pro, 900Mhz, 320mg ram, 40gig hard. I am still using office 200 pro however. Now, when I open Outlook, I get and erro and then the program works once i say cancel. The error is something like.
" Error in opening Norton antivirus, blah blah, you may not have enough system resources, memory, or missing a .dll blah blah. You MAY be able to fix it with "detect and repair" in help section of Outlook, blah blah"
I did that, and I had to put in disc 1 of Office 2000, then it did some stuff for a few minutes, asked me to reboot, and then all that and nothing. Same error. I also, reloaded Norton antivirus and still the same issue.
Is Outlook trying to utilize Norton for checking incoming or outgoing messages? Do I need Office XP? How can I get rid of this error message?
Thanks all: e3

This is a problem with the plugin that norton's uses to scan mail. I see this happen often when either a new mail profile is created or a different mail program is used.
Try this:
To solve the problem, search your computer for Extend.dat and delete the file. Extend.dat will be recreated the next time you open Outlook, and the Exchange plug-in will be installed when the first email is opened. The default location of Extend.dat depends on the operating system:
Windows 98
C:\Windows\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
Windows NT 4.0
C:\WinNT\Profiles\%Username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.
Windows 2000/XP
C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Thanks for your help but my PC could not find that file. The message when I open Outlook is:
"The add-in C:\program files\norton antivirus\vpmsece.dll could not be loaded. This problem may be resolved by using Detect and Repair on the Help menu. Unable to load .....vpmsece.dll. You may be out of memory, system resources, or missing a .dll file"
What gives? My PC search did find the vpmsece.dll file in the C:\Program Files\NavNT folder.
Thanks all. Peace: e3

jeherrin: OK, now figured this out. I went to the Symantec website and they suggest to do either what you said or try to locate the .dll in question and place it in the folder Outlook will look for it in. I tried that and it did not work. In the actual error message I wrote above tells the location it is looking. That folder does not even exist, so I created the folder, copied in the .dll and the issue is gone.
Thanks for your help! peace: e3

Just to answer your question...
This file that it is looking for is the MS exchange client virus protection for norton's. When outlook loads, norton tells it that it needs to load this file to support it's virus protection. Hence the name...
vpmsece.dll (Virus Protection for MicroSoft Exchange Client) the last e is probably their version release.
Since you were using Express when you loaded Norton's the first time, Norton didn't load the file you need to run virus protection for Outlook. Therefor, the directory was never created nor was the file.
Glad to see your up and running.

Hey thanks for the help and fast replies. Now that I know you are an e-mail wiz I need to ask why on the same PC, on my wifes User profile her outlook express seems really slow when going from (ex.) "inbox" to "personal folder" views. Also, what the hell is this file she keeps getting on her desktop? Its only named "~". Just that squiggly thing. I delete it and it comes back. Peace: e3
