can`t open attachments

As of a couple of days ago when we try to open attachments we get a message that Outlook Express has denied access because they might contain a virus. Before that we were given a warning that they might, but we could go ahead and open them. I contacted our web server and he said it was an automatic update and said we could go in security and disable it. Found the box that was checked, but would not let me change it. We have lost pictures and other things we wanted. Any suggestions on how to override this?

Is this Windows XP?

Were you given an option to save them to disk?

What anti-virus protection are you using?

We have Windows 98 and no we can`t save to disc. the message just says OE has denied us access to the attachments.
We have Norton antivirus. This just started 2 days ago. prior to that we got a message warning us they might contain a virus, but we were still able to open them.

Interesting, because some anti-virus programs work best when the suspected file is saved to disk and scanned. If you cannot save them to disk, you would have no way of keeping them. Tough problem. Ordinarily, I get the option with a right-click to Open or Save As.

Do you know what the format is for the nettlesome files? Perhaps changing to another can help.

You might check the settings on Norton to see if something was inadvertently changed. Talk to your web server again and see about the type of automatic update he provided and get some step by step information on how to change the setting he mentions.

Hope this helps.

I had this happen to me before. The setting was in outlook express. Something about attachment security.

I'll check when I get home. I use lotus notes @ work.
