I use Win98se and there is an icon in the tray where the date is. If its not there then check under start/programs/accessories/entertainment and see if the sound recorder and volume controls are there.

If not then you may have reload your audio drivers.

do you mean where do you adjust it from(like the speaker icon) or that you lost the speaker icon? Does the sound still work?

Sounds like the computer is either not recognizing the sound card or it's not loading the drivers (or has corrupted drivers.)

Go to the Control Panel, System, and Hardware (depends on the OS, but you want to get to Device Manager.) You'll probably have either a red X over the Sound Card or have a yellow exclamation point over it - if it's a red X, it's disabled; if it's a yellow exclamation, it has problems of some sort, double-click it to find out more.

More than likely, you can just uninstall the device from Device Manager and restart - Windows will typically reload the drivers on restart. But, it's not a bad idea to have them handy before you restart - the worst that can happen is that you don't have them and you can't install the drivers on restart, so you would have to download them and try again. Not a big deal.

Good luck!
