virus scan for older computer

My mother has my old computer 200 megahertz Gateway which she only really uses for email (she has Windows 98SE).
She recently got a broadband connection, and I tried to load my new Norton Antivirus (2004), but the computer bogged down with the antivirus running in the background.
Is there another antivirus program that we can use that won't slow the computer down?

not sure its Norton

There are other av programs available, some for free. Others will post the names and sites.

But I don't think its Norton doing that. At work we ran Norton on 166 mhz machines with no problems.

Please give us some specifics.
