media player skipping on one song
On a HP laptop (800Mhz Celeron, 256Mb ram(max amt.)) running XP and Media Player 9, the media player will after playing for a while will start skipping on a particular song (similiar to a CD player skipping on a scratched CD) and get stuck on that song causing the computer to lockup and be rebooted. The only programs running and MS Word and Quickverse 7 (a biblical research program). The computer is used by a relative so I getting this info. 2nd hand. It appears to be random as to when it occurs and I unable to recreate the problem myself when using it (of course!!). All of the songs are on the hard drive so no actual CD skipping is occuring. Although when this computer was running the ME op. sys. in the past and a CD was playing for quite a while it would lock up entirely (without skipping at all).

I would be suspicious of heat in a random situation such as this. Check to see that the fans are running and clean. Check to see that the dust bunnies are out of the computer.
The usual maintenance of: scandisk, defrag, virus scan, and ad-aware are always in order.
Random problems are always the most difficult to diagnose and correct.
