usb port ?

I have a about a 6 year old computer. 400 mhz pentium II. it doesn't have any usb ports. I want to get a digital camera and i believe the only way to download pictures is to use a usb cable. Any thought how to get a usb port. do I just add some kind of a usb card into the computer or no. thanks

If your operating system will support it, a USB card can be installed in an open PCI slot. Check your camera's requirements to be sure that you get a card that suits the camera. The new standard is USB 2.0.

Hope this helps.

Hi jcraft,

Many cameras come with usb port connector cables and with serial port connector cables.

I've had a Polaroid PDC640 for five years that I download with the serial port cable although I have a usb cable as well.

You may want to check with your camera manufactor or if you're buying a new camera ask about the download options.

If I remember correctly (correct me if I'm wrong) Win98 does not support USB, but Win98SE does?

You would be much better off if you could use USB - it's much faster than Serial connections.

Good luck!

Actually 98 will support USB, at least mine does. You will need to install drivers for 2.0, if that is the route you take.

USB PCI

Here is a good source for PCI USB cards:

A 5 port refurb (manufacturer) 22.49 plus shipping:

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=139797

Used many of them and they are fine!! Good people to deal with too!!!

If your camera has a flash memory card by all means get a usb flash memory card reader, fstaest and easiest way to move pics from camera to PC!!

Also all USB items will work with 2.0, all 1.1 stuff is backward compatible !!!

Good luck BTW saw flash card readers on the net for 5.00 !!!
