Internet connect window messing up my gaming

I'm having a problem with a internet connect window popping up at inconvienient times. When I am gaming and the window pops up my screen blanks, the window comes up wanting to know if I want to connect, and I have to cancel before the game comes back. When I am racing on Nascar thunder 4, I usually crash before my picture comes back in. My isp says I probably have a program causing this such as AOL messanger but I sure can't find it. I don't use AOL. I go into properties in the window and cancel out the dial up when there is no connection property but this doesn't help. Any help?

Are you on cable or dsl? Do you run an antivirus that uses automatic updates, or windows update? Have you ever been on dialup with this computer? Have you opened up internet explorer and clicked on TOOLS/Internet Options/CONNECTIONS and see whats listed? Is this totally random or does it happen around the same time everyday, or after the same amount of "on" time everyday, or does it happen everyday? What operating system are you using? Have run ran antivirus and spyware detection software? do you have faxing software installed?

Try this:

Go to Tools in the Internet Explorer bar and click Options.
Click the Connection tab - and check the "Never dial a connection" option about half-way down.

Ok out and see if that works.

It sounds like something is trying to open an internet connection and therefore popping-up the connection window. If you do the above, then you will tell Windows not to try to connect automatically and to not open a connection window.

If you have a dialer on your computer (a bad dialer - like for porn) then running AdAware, Spybot, etc. may help.

Also, if I am remembering correctly, on Win9X systems there is a Dial-Up option to disable automatic dialing - you may need to change that. Open the Dial-Up Networking window and click Advanced in the menu bar (again, from memory) and go to Dial-up Options. I believe it's in there. Or, it may be in the properties for each connection. But, it's been a while, so I'm somewhat guessing at this.

Good luck!

I am on dialup, no cable available out herre in the sticks. I'm running xp home edition, NAV corporate edition antivirus software, with a freebie zone alarm firewall. I currently have the never dial a connection box checked under connections. I can't find the dialup options today but have seen it before. Funny, I may be wrong but I don't think the dialog box has shown today. Maybe everything didn't take effect until I rebooted. I'll keep checking. Thanks for you guys help. The box always comes up on initial startup, when I turn the comp on. and every 5 min or so pops up again. Sometimes I have multiple windows. I try to keep my computer clean and have no viruses.

As has been suggested, something you are running is trying to connect to the Internet every 5 minutes. Since your connection is not present, you are being asked to agree to, or approve of, the connection.

Have you looked through the list of automatically started programs to see what is being started upon bootup? Have you looked at the list of running prorgams to see what is running all the time? Have you checked for spyware programs?

Perhaps it is the game(s) you are running. Check the configuration settings. Do the games have the capability to run across the Internet, connecting to other players games or to a central web site?

I would say the never dial check box AND rebooting the system after changing settings.
