There are several places in the registry where entries can be placed to cause programs to start at power up.

However, not every one of these places should be changed useing regedit similar registry editor programs.

Some other types of programs place entries into the registry, but use multiple entries, so shoud not be edited manually.

what exactly are you wanting to do? change the actual startup and shutdown screens, or get rid of them. You can make it be anything you want. They are 320x400 256 color bmps. You can replace them with anything else the same size. They are located at: C:\windows\LOGO.SYS
Double click on it.
It will ask you what to open the file with.
Select the MSPaint program to open it with. Then make all the changes that you want and save them.
You probably want to make a copy the logos.sys file in another folder just in case you don't like the changes that you made.

Here are some freeware programs that could help:

Start up and shut down screens are NOT in the registry and anyone telling you such should stay away from this forum.

As was mentioned above they are in the C:\windows folder

The Logos.sys file is the one the reads "It is safe to shut off your computer"

The Logow.sys file is the Windows98 Splash screen that you get at shut down.

The startup splash screen is know as Logo.sys and is located in the C:\ directory. On some systems this file is not there but putting one there will give you a replacement
