Connecting a desktop to a laptop?

How would I go about hooking up a P3 laptop computer to a Desktop computer to do some file transfers? The laptop does not have a LAN connection. Thanks for the help

What kind of cable would be the easiest for him since he has no NIC installed?

I will start my answer with several question.

Is this to be a permanent connection, or do you just want to transfer a few files and then disconnect the systems? What size are the files, and how many are there?

You say that the laptop does not have an Ethernet connection. Does it have a PCMCIA slot? Does it have a serial interface that is available (i.e. nothing using it)?

Does the desktop have an Ethernet interface? Do you have a router?

I am asking these questions because any solution requires purchasing or borrowing hardware of some sort. Even the slowest solution, using floppy disks, requires having floppies available.

The laptop has a PCcard slot but I dont have a PC NIC, I do not have a router, The files would be about 2Gb and the connection does not need to be perminent as I just need to do the once off transfer, although I may need to do another transfer down the track, Thanks for the help

Might be a good idea to get a NIC card and a crossover cable to transfer files.

You also could get internet on this laptop.

I recommend purchasing a network adapter for this computer.

You could go with a PCMCIA NIC, or you could purchase a USB NIC. Either way, you would then be able to put this laptop on the Internet, or connect to your desktop to transfer files.

Check Ebay for a PCMCIA 10/100 NIC - you could probably find one for $5-10 (less than the price of a cable for direct cable connection.)

Good luck!

I picked up one from Wally World (WalMart) for about $20 if you're wanting it in a hurry.
