Windows update problems

OK I just put in a new hard drive and reloaded everything.

I went to get the newest windows 2000 pro update and upon downloading and installing it I get a blue screen that said "error" something. It would not let me do anything else. So I had to reload everything again and have not done any more updates.

It would have been helpful to know what the error was. try downloading only one or two updates at a time. Also, look at the updates description. If it is something you dont need,like currency conversions, dont download it.

You're not being very specific about your problem. I hope you have it fixed by now (since this is a week late), but I thought I'd respond anyway. I had a similar experience and I learned that the problem was STUPID. My Windows TIME was wrong! HA! Do you believe that?!

This MIGHT help you, but you are using Win2K, not XP. I found out about the time problem from here, which is an outstanding XP troubleshooting site. Perhaps it will also work with 2K.

HTH,

Chris

From Microsoft:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
When you try to install security\Critical Updates the installation fails and the Windows
Update.log file contains error 80070643.

Suggestion 1
==========
This can occur if the hotfix installer was referencing:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log and the file was corrupt. Either renaming C:
\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log or renaming the entire
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2 folder will allow the hotfix install to complete
normally.

Suggestion 2
============
Register the following system files.

1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run."
2. Type "regsvr32 licdll.dll" (without quotes).
3. Click "OK."
4. Type "regsvr32 regwizc.dll"(without quotes).
5. Click "OK."

Suggestion 3
============
This can occur if the "Microsoft Root Authority" certificate or the "NO
LIABILITY ACCEPTED, (c)97 VeriSign, Inc." certificate under Trusted Root
Certification Authorities has been removed. On another computer that has the Microsoft Root Authority certificate installed, do the following:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," then click "Internet options."
3. Click "Content," and then click "Certificates."
4. Click "Trusted Root Certification Authorities."
5. Scroll down until you locate Microsoft Root Authority certificate.
6. Click "Export."
7. Follow the prompts to export the certificate to "DER encoded Binary
x.509(.CER)" file. On the computer that cannot install updates, follow the steps to import the certificate you saved.

Suggestion 4
============
Try deleting the WUTEMP folder or removing the contents in that
folder. There might have been a trace of a past download or corrupted content
in the folder that is causing the download to fail.

Temporarily disable any virus and Web accelerator/enhancement programs.

Hi everyone:

It's me again. We keep getting these popup window-like messages. They say something like we need to go to windows-patch.info and download . Well I don't trust it and I went to the site from a work computer and looks like a hoax to me. You got to pay 20 bucks for the download. Any one have any ideas of why I am getting these messages? I have a cable modem.

Thanks

Disable the Windows Messenger service (not MSN Messenger - Windows Messenger.) Don't pay for software to do it for you, you can easily do it yourself.

I'm not as familiar with 2k as I am XP, but you should be able to get to it from the Control Panel (I forget, is there a Services icon in Control Panel in 2k?) Anyway, if that doesn't work, go to Start/Run and type "net stop messenger" - that will temporarily take care of the problem, until next restart.

Good luck!

LOL. Sorry, but if you're connected to the internet, you are more than likely NOT the only one installing software on your system. That's why it's called "SPYware"! Download and run Adaware. You can get the link from the "essential free programs" sticky thread atop this forum.
