WORD error message

Does anyone know how to solve this error message in WORD:

"An error has occurred in your program. To keep working, click Ignore and save to a new file. To quit, click Close. You will lose information you entered since last save."

That error is far too generic to even begin to guess at a cause. It may be a problem with Word, or it may have nothing to do with Word at all, being caused by some other app running in the background.
Which version of Windows and which version of Word?

First thing to do is rule out a background application, run msconfig and select diagnostic startup, then reboot. If Word runs ok one of the apps loading at startup is the problem. If it still doesn't work, use your original Word or Office installation CD and perform a repair. Post back with the results.
