C;/program files

Used Computer ;
Can i delete all the program files in my comp.
No idea what has been added over time .
want to start with a clean program file ==
no idea what needs to stay in the program files for comp.
to still work. C;/program files . folder

do not want to format the hard drive...
just clean out - old odd & ends ..
I have a cd win98 -- will it reinstall neded files in C;/program files ?

If you want to start fresh and avoid any problems, then I recommend completely reformatting the hard drive and starting over. After doing so you will have to reinstall the operating system, but the system will run faster (until it eventually becomes bogged down again) and you will not have other's problems to deal with.

To answer your original question, no you cannot simply delete the files contained in "C:\program files". While doing so will remove tyhe files from the PC and free up hard drive space, it will not completely uninstall the programs. You will end up with other unnecessary files (not in "c:\program files") still installed, and the registry will still contain entries for the programs.
