auto updates

Hello
I have win xp. For the average pc user who can't really understand the different critical updates, service packs, security updates etc which option is best to use for automatic updates(rt clk my comp, props)?
I had win 98 and it ran well until I downloaded the updates and it was a mess. I had to recover.
So far I have downloaded the worm blaster.
I have good a/v and a firewall.
Right now I have not enabled anything to be updated or downloaded but microsoft says I have 16 updates re: hackers etc.
Thank you
Pete

Personally, I disabled AUTOMATIC updating. I check Windows Update weekly, though and it is IMPERATIVE that you update all security updates asap. I generally don't install other stuff (like Moviemaker updates, etc. But everything else is, well... Critical.
