download blewout windows '98?

hello and hopeful. downloaded a free antispyware program found on zdnet, something like maxion. when restarting, windows'98 couldn't load. could not find my discs. a friend had to reformat the hd and installed windows xp pro and norton 2004 after finding six viruses in two layers in the boot section. now it takes 8-12 minutes to bootup, the hd is constantly working, and almost as long to to get a site to open. previously about 3 mins to bootup and a 5-10 secs to open a page. the machine has been fine ('98 amd 200 chip, 512ram and cybermax computer). i don't know about computers but this is not running as it was at all. thanks for any help.

A 300 MHz processor is the minimum recommended processor speed, according to Microsoft, for Windows XP. A minimum 233 MHz is the lowest that will work with Windows XP, again, according to Microsoft.

It is my opinion that you you should not have put Windows XP on this machine. I hope you can get your money back.

Agreed. Since the system doesn't even have the necessary "horsepower" to run XP, it has no business being installed. Since the drive was formatted, I doubt you have a further virus or spyware problem (although it is possible). However, at this point I would guess that your problems are because of the lack of hardware power to run XP. Try 98 again and post back if you have further problems.

Sorry, but I really do think that's the first step in solving your problem.

3 minutes for win98 is even to long. I would say 1 minute should be about right. That processor doesnt even come close to being capable of win xp. You really do need to go back to win 98.

Otherwise, it would be beneficial to install the motherboard drivers.
