clean out hard drive permanently--how to?

Dear Folks, I have an old computer to give away/ donate to local charity but first I want it clean. Is there a "control--alt--something" that I can do to wipe out everything in the machine's hard drive? I think I did it a few years ago due to a virus and would like to wipe this boy clean. Thanks in advance, QR

You can install an operating system on it. It will format the entire drive and build the files for the installation. This would be especially true if you formatted for a file type different from the original use. That is, format for NTFS when FAT32 had been used.
