How Do I Network?

Hi, Help anyone! I want to get internet connection using cable modem with my laptop and desktop computers. I have a Netgear 8 port hub. It seems I can only use them one at a time, not both at the same time to have internet connection. Can anyone help? I greatly appreciate any help! Do I have to set up some type of Network connection? I don't want to share any files, etc. I just want to be able to have internet on my computers. Thanks again everyone!

sometimes a hub will work with the cable provider, sometimes it wont. Depends on the cable provider. You should get a router.

In order for your hub to work your ISP must provide you with 2 IP's, most do not unless you pay extra, so you'll need a router or set up one machine with 2 network cards and use it as the "server".

Clarification: You don't need two network cards installed in one PC to use the PC for ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), you only need one network card. You just configure the one network card to have two different IP addresses.

Whoops, your correct, forgot he had a hub. The 2 NIC's come in to play if you only have 2 PC's and no hub.

Get a router. Not very expensive, and it'll provide you with a builtin switch (better than a hub) and a reasonable firewall, too. Worth the short money.

Thanks for all your help everyone, got a router from NewEgg and it's on its way. I was just trying to save some $$ after just building a new gaming computer! Oh well, a few more bucks won't kill me....yet! LOL

Yeah, I understand.

Assuming a good gaming machine, the video cards can run $500 just themselves... They get real expensive real quick. Getting ready for Doom3 are you?

Gonna be an awesome game... I might just dust off my teenage gaming hands for that one...
