Quick question about DVD Burners

I'm looking into getting one but I'm unclear on a few things, hopefully someone can help me out...

First off, can I take any video format and burn it onto a DVD?
Second, can I burn data onto a DVD?
Third, why are there so many different types or DVD disks? (dvd-r, dvd-rw, etc.)
and Fourth...all legalities asside, can I burn copies of movies say from Blockbuster for example?...and the same with video games (PS2)?...

Thanks all!

and....
yes...
yes...
there is really only 2 formats, which are plus(+) and minus(-).
DVD stands for Digital Versatile/Video Disc, DVDR stands for DVD Recordable and DVDRW for DVD ReWriteable. A couple other formats are: DVD+R DL and DVD-RAM, but they don't really apply to most people. (yet)
yes...

knowledge and software make almost anything possible. read the faqs at the above sites, read the reviews of burners and go for it. Most burners nowadays are dual format.

different formats 'cause people can't agree

The dvd format war remind me of the old vhs-beta war. Then it was Sony vs the rest of the world.
There are two groups vying to be "THE" dvd format. Why - $$$$ of course. The winner will reap lots of cash!!

At least more dvd players are being introduced that will play any format.

In addition to the burner, you will need software to do the burn. Most (all?) burners come with the necessary software.

As for legalities - you are allowed to make one copy of a dvd you buy. However, getting the proper software to bypass the copy protection is another tale.

You can find some pretty good deals now days on 8X +/- R writers these days. If you plan to watch movies on any other player other then your pc dvd-rom you are best to get a burner with -R. Most of the stand alone players will not read +R. I don't have a PS-2 so not sure on its format. Check out the DVD Digest for more info.

re: backup

Check out DVD Shrink (http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html). Nice piece of software and the price is right.
