Computer slow after defragmenting HD

I recently defragmented my Hard Drive, and since then my computer has been running slower! I tried using System restore to correct it, but that hasn't helped.

I have a Dell Dimension XPS T series w/ Pentium 3, 648Mhz with Windows XP.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, I recently increased my memory from 256MB to 640MB (i'm certain it is the right type of memory - PC100). I'm pretty sure the memory upgrade is unreleated to the slowdown after defragmenting, but I thought it might be good to know.

thanks,

DS

Try removing the new memory and see if the computer speeds up. If so, install only the new and see how it does. It may be that there is some conflict between the old and the new memory. If nothing else has been changed, look here first.

Although this is a commercial site, the information on this page may explain your problem.

Hope this helps.

To answer your questions, I have a normal start up. I do have Audio & Video as well, but I don't use them that often (or have a lot of those files stored).

I did not defrag in safe mode, i just open the program from the start taskbar.

Also, my anti virus program is Norton AV/Internet security 2003.

Computer slow after defragmenting HD

Thanks for all the advice on this.

So I pulled out the new memory and put the old back in, and that didn't correct the problem. The computer just ran slower. So the new memory is back in, and for the time being, things are running fine.

I spoke with my IT guy at work and got his thoughts. He suggested that there's no reason defragmenting should make the computer run slower - the result should be just the opposite. He suggested I run Ad Aware .

I just ran ad aware and it found 3 Reg Keys and about 160 cookies. Doesn't seem to be anything major but maybe that will speed the PC up.

That said, does anyone have any other suggestions? Right now I am trying to remove any other programs I don't use/need. Perhaps that will help.

Thanks again.

In my experience, 20 pieces of spyware such as are found by Ad Aware will be enough to slow your computer noticeably. Removing the 160+ will make a difference. Run Ad Aware everyday to keep the system clean.
