In my opinion you should never upgrade from one OS to another on a Windows system. Rather, you should completely reformat your hard drive and start over. Windows does much better with a brand new installation than it does with an upgrade. This is especially true when switching from one of the Windows 9x series OSes (95, 98, MyEnemy), but is also true even with Windows NT or Windows 2000.
However, back to your question. What do you mean by checking compatibility? Does your computer meet the minimum requirements for Windows XP? How much memory does your computer have? What processor is installed? What size hard drive is installed?

At least a pent 11
It probably will work with a pent II with around at least 250 Mhz
but now with that SP-2 service pack that Is going to eat Into resources
I have mine Installed on a pent III with a selective start up..It works very well for me.
