Irritating Ad on Aim

A friend of mine has AIM (aol instant messager.) Lately, everytime he logs on, he has pop-up that appears over his buddy list and he can't get rid of it. He has run adaware and spycatcher, and still can't get rid of ad. Is this adware or anyone have any idea of how to get rid of it without restoring the pc? He has Win98.

A pic of this popup is at http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...36/popupad.jpg

Thanks, Pate

Has your friend also run a virus scan? Check add/remove programs, too and look for anything from GAIN or Xupiter or anything like that. Adaware may not have removed full programs.

HTH,

Actually,

I think the problem is more with AIM. I recently tried to access an old AIM account and was bombarded with pop-ups...38 to be exact. Anyway, unless your friend has a pop-up blocker, I think he'll get hit again. Luckily, I was using a lab computer when it happened and caught the interest of the school IT admin. He told me that with the recent update with AIM he's been getting hit too. Guess AIM isn't totally free afterall...

laters,
me
