modem help

windows 98se: I am going to attempt to replace the modem in my hp6640c. I have aquired another modem that appears to be similar with a driver cd. I am not sure exactly what to do. can you guide me. Before i shut down and physically remove the old modem from the computer, do i remove the modem from windows, via add/remove programs or device manager or not at all?. If i use device manager, do i remove conexant pci modem enumerator under hsfmodem, and conexant softk 56 datafax pci modem. my next question is: when i get past this phase, and physically remove the old modem, and install the new one and reboot, will windows want to install the modem by itself via wizzard, or will i have to use the cd. I have heard that windows may not do it right. as always, thanks in advance for any help

In device manager, system, remove the current modem in both stated instances.

Power down, remove the old modem, install the new one.

Power up, when windows detects the new modem and wants to install the driver, select have disk, and insert the disk for the new modem. If this does not work, the disk may have an installer program on it. Run the installer, then reboot. This should cover the alternative.

Hope this helps.
