These devices have been around for a while. They work very well. They do have one drawback. Your system will assign the next com port or the next lpt ports for them, which may mean that your software won;t work with them.

In my case I have two USB to serial adapters. one ends up as COM4, the next as COM5. The problem is that many programs don't support COM5, they stop at COM4. I ended up installing a manual four port switch. I feed the output of the COM4 USB to serial adapter into the switch and then connect my serial devices to the switch. Since I only use one at a time anyway this is no big deal to have to manually turn a knob.

Do you know if this is a problem for Hyperterminal?

I was considering buying one of these but the cost made me think twice...
