copy & paste problems from some newspapers and magazines

I've noticed that some lame newspapers and magazines have somehow made it almost impossible to highlight their printed material with a mouse stoke. they obviously don't want anyone to copy their material to a site like this (which imo, if they don't want someone to copy their stuff (as long as they acknowledge where it came from) they should get off the 'net and stick to print. I've also noticed that sometimes I can't highlight just part of an article or table and must highlight the whole table then delete the parts I don't want. the question: is there something in the formatting that prevents the use of copy and paste? is there a way around it?

It is a shame that one would want to protect copyright material. Have you tried to e-mail and ask for permission to use something? They may just be quite accommodating.

Got any specific sites in mind? There are ways around it, but as chfite said, it's probably just as easy to try to get their permission first if your need for it is just.

Angry

it's a paragraph from an espn story, that I was going to copy and paste to a college football board for discussion. it would be the same as posting a paragraph from an article in pc world to this site for discussion. nobody is going to hassle with all that red tape of e-mailing some media site just to discuss something in one of their articles. sheeesh.

Neither do I. What's the problem specifically?

the specific problem: when I tried to highlight only one paragraph, the whole article would "highlight". there was no way to just highlight one specific word or paragraph, because the whole page including links, advertising would "highlight" when you left-clicked the mouse and started to pull it over the paragraph. I've by-passed this problem before by "select all" and then transferring to notepad, then deleting everything before the selection and after the selection. then copy/pasting this into the thread. I just thought there may be an easier way. I guess if you had to have it, you could also use "print-screen" and take a pic of the printed material if nothing else worked, but that seems ridiculous.

Well, another thing you could do is view the page source code. In that code, find the paragraph you want, highlight only that, and C&P as usual.

There are other ways, but that'll work.

If all of it comes with select and copy, drop it into a word processor, and cut out what you don't want. Then copy and paste what remains.

As for the bit on C & P tables, most tables are put together by folks trying to get home at a reasonable hour. I say reasobale, because rather than taking the time to code the table section by section so you can highlight, the table is placed in as an image. That's why the whole thing highlights....soooooooo you could copy the whole image and edit it down in photosuite to what you want, or you could post the whole image...

My 2 bits,
