Wireless Router

My son's apartment has no access to DSL lines - but he does have cable - so he is going to get a cable modem. But he does not want to run wire all over the apartment - so he is wondering if he can use a wireless router at the point the cable enters the apartment (by the tv) - and get signal to his computer that way. I always thought that you had to have a computer hooked up to a router and OTHER computers would work opff that. He has ONE computer and just does not want to run the cable over to it - will that work?

Yea, this should work no problem. He just needs to buy a Wi-Fi (wireless) card to put into his computer.

Security with the wireless routers can be a problem if they are not secure. Be sure to read the section in the manual on security carefully.

Your son would find it much cheaper to forego the router and instead use a long cat 5 cable to make the connection. This would be the safest and cheapest way to go.

However, wireless is an option. He needs to buy a wireless broadband router, and then install a wireless network card in his computer. He may also a regular wired network card in the computer as well, to properly configure the router initially.

As has been stated, security with wireless networks is a big problem, especially in apartments and other places where people are close. Unless your son is very careful, he will end up supplying internet service to other people in the apartment complex. He will also end up sharing the contents of his hard drive with everyone as well.
