differing page widths - LCD monitor

Just switched from CRT to LCD monitor and everything's hunky-dory except for one little curiosity. Some web sites download using the full screen width, as they did on the CRT, while others are using much less, perhaps half. While this is not a super problem, it does make the text more challenging for these old eyes. Is this standard with an LCD monitor or is there something I've missed. Windows XP (home) in use.

It probably has little or nothing to do with the LCD, so much as it has to do with the resolution, size, etc...

In addition, it depends heavily on how the website is coded, and since MANY sites are not well coded, it can be a pain.
