Prepping a used computer to sell

I've got an older computer that I'd like to sell. I don't think there's anything confidential saved on it (I've pretty much only used it as a backup to surf the web when my wife has needed to use the main computer), but to be safe I'd like to erase anything that might be on there. Is there an easy way to wipe any existing files clean without removing the programs?

He doesn't want to remove programs, so wiping the drive would not be ideal!

Just go through the machine with a fine tooth comb, and you should be ok, but I really would recommend wiping the drive and reinstalling just the programs.
