is my toolbar getting hijacked?
about every week my top toolbar goes from this to this ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------. when this happens my bottom tool bar which shows which windows and utilities are open disappears, but reappears when the mouse pointer gets in the vicinity. I can get the original configuration back by minimizing a window and then bringing it back to regular size. however, when this starts, when I open a new IE window it's back to the unwanted configuration. when I shut down the computer, then restart, I'm back to normal.

I only see the second image, not the first, so I can't compare, but it sounds like spyware or a virus to me. Especially since it's IE.
Check up on those.
I'd try to fix your post, but I am no longer a moderator. Perhaps another mod will help?

no I'm the only one on this computer. I've got zonealarm running and updated same with spybot and adaware (they've found nothing), I downloaded that new microsoft spy finder but then found out it only works with w2k or xp. antivirus is updated and running and hasn't picked up zip.
It always goes from one to the other when I'm surfing and it's not predictable. it always disappears when I shutdown and restart.

it looks to me like it's 2 different browsers...one being the regular internet explorer, and the other one being the msn branded explorer.
it also sounds like when the browser changes, your toolbar is set to "hide", like a different user was on with different settings,although, when the browser is set at full page,it automatically will cover, or "hide" the toolbar.
look and see if you have another browser on your computer or listed in your firewall. you could delete it, or ban it from internet access, but i wonder, if it does it fairly regularly every week, if you don't have some program installed, or do something that changes it?
does this happen in the middle of doing something, or just when you open the browser?
of course, you could always change to firefox, and not worry about that anymore!
