Generally, this means that the pictures are not available from the source. If you have a slow connection, the browser may time out waiting for the photos to load. Right click on the space where the picture should be and select view image. If the image presents itself, then check your settings to see if you have anything blocked.
Check to see if under Tools, Internet Options, Content, if the Content Advisor is enabled. If so, they may be blocked through it.
Does this happen for all sites or just one? If it is just one site, the problem may lie with the server or connection to it.
Hope this helps.

Chris:
It happens all the time on all sites. I went to the Content Advisor and found the it is enabled. Try as I may, I couldn't find a way to disable it & could not find a way to do this. Also tried to adjust the level of control of of incoming trash --- thinking this might be the problem --- and the slider kept returning to "0" after it was reset.
Right clicking on the red X did not find the option view image!

My daughter-in-law came up with the answer. Follow these steps ...Start - Control Panel - Internet Properties - Advanced - Scroll down until you see Multimedia and see if the Show Pictures box is checked off. If not, check it.

you can also download and use firefox:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/central.html
a very nice browser and top choice for users not wanting to use internet explorer.
