internet explorer file missing

I am a dsl tec for the local telephone company. Recently I installed dsl with MSN on 2 different customers computers.
Both times the dsl installed perfectly and we could surf with no problem, using internet explorer. When I tried to install MSN, either with the disc or membercenter.msn.com, not only didn't it install, but it seems to have changed/lost or whatever, a internet explorer file, where we could no longer surf.
Both customers have XP and worked ok, before I got there. I'm getting paranoid, and my tec support can't help with computer related problems. I can surf just fine on my laptop.
Any suggestions?

Were you getting an error when trying to start IE or it would start but just not access any websites?

On the first computer, I just couldn't surf. On the 2nd computer, I got an error message, saying that a tempfile from Internet explorer was missing, and I couldn't surf.
