Printer prints gibberish

My HP Deskjet 540 has suddenly started printing gibberish. It won't print the actual document. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I've disconnected it, waited a while, and reconnected it. Any ideas?

Mine does that on occassion. I hate it.
Wish I had a good answer for you.

It usually happens right after I have some kind of jam or other interruption in the printer.

I usually just put used paper in the tray and let it run it's entire course.
Then I turn it off and reboot my computer.
It usually prints ok after that.

Maybe someone will have a good answer.

I have seen this happen when trying to print from the web. When clicking the
print icon is would print garbage (machine code) but clicking FILE / PRINT
worked fine. If you are printing local documents you might try a new
data cable.

I seen this when I did a driver update to the printer, and it ruined it.

With the norm , of paper jams and software hick ups, but is this does this after rebooting a few times and any thing trying to prevent, it could be the printer has failed.

I had this happen on a HP Deskjet 1120. I replaced the the cable and it was fine. If it still does it after a system reboot, you may want to try the cable!

I would agree with the cable being at fault. Also have you got the latest drivers from the manufacturers website?

You say you disconnected, but have you tried powering down the printer for a minute or so, then turning it back on. This should clear the printer's cache.

Seems to me I used to have this problem too, back when I had a DJ540.

Printer Problem

I can't power off the printer. It used to be that I could touch the power button and it would power off. (The green light would actually go off.) But now, no matter how many times you press that button, the green light stays on. The only way to turn it off is to unplug it.

My printer also does this. However, I have found that it will usually only print garbage when I click off the page I am trying to print before it has had a change to finish (or sometimes start) printing.

Try waiting a few seconds after you tell it to print before you go about surfing elsewhere.

I would hope that sometime in the past 5 years the OP was able to solve the problem.. Or buy a new printer..

After 5 years, I'm sure the member, who is no longer a member btw, probably has a new printer by now.

MattTheEngineer, a new member (BTW, welcome to the DIY forums!), may have seen this as part of a Google search an not realized that it was a five-year-old thread. We've all done that in the past.
