Print quality

Is print quality related to the ink cartridge or the printer? HP has ink cartridges that can be used in many different printers. Does the least expensive printer produce prints as good as the most expensive printer if they both use the same cartridges?

No. Print quality depends on many factors.

One is dots per inch or dpi. generally speaking, the greater the dpi the better the quality, assuming you print at the higher resolution.

Another factor is paper. there are different types of paper, and different qualities within each type.

Another quality is ink. The ink needs to match the paper.

racraft is right, there are many variables that determine print quality.

I have gone through a few ink jet printers and the ones I am familiar with had several models that took the same cartridge like you say.
The print quality was the same, what was different was some of the other features like print speed, mem card slots and other niceties.

If you're in the market for a new printer, and print quality is a big concern, your best bet is to do a lot of research.

Read user and professional reviews, shop around at local stores, obtain some printed samples, if possible, but don't be fooled by the print samples printed out on glossy photo paper - see if you can get it printed on the regular stuff. Also, don't trust the word of a sales guy at a big box store.
