Hook up wireless.. where to start

I have a old Gateway desktop and it works fine, however I recently bought a HP Pavillion 8k series and want to go wireless..
I have everything I need, Router etc. My ? is
What do I need to do with the older computer to have that still hooked up to the cable modem.
Cable line to Moden, Modem to router, router to desk top and then hook up the wireless from the lap top...
I tried to hook up the lap top with the wireless and I could not get on line, I assume that I have issues with the firewalls etc...
Can I use a USB network adaptor on the desktop to us or should I set up as stated above...

so the router you mention is wireless, but has a wired port? if so, then you can hook the desktop to the router (wired), and use the wireless in the laptop.
