file recovery

My sister-in-law has a Dell desktop, 4yrs+ old w/WinME. Recently, the whole thing went south. She has all the restore discs that came with it, but needs to recover all the pictures stored on the HD from the past. She made NO BACKUPS of anything! How can these pics be pulled off the HD befrore using the restore disc since that erases everything?

Attach the drive to another computer.

When you do go to rescue the system, I recommend upgrading to either Windows 98 or Windows XP, depending on what the system can handle.

Depends

Well it depends on what "went south" means.

If the operating system just went south and the hard drive still works racrafts suggestion will do the trick.

If the hard drive went bad, she is pretty much SOL. It is very expensive to have data recovery done and very rarely worth it, unless it is critical data.

Thanks for the reply. That is what I suggested to her. Since she is 100 miles away, I suggested buying a new drive for now, install OS so at least she can get up and running again. In the meantime she can send me the drive and I can pull the info off of it and burn to CD.
