faster computer?

i have a dell computer about 1 1/2 yrs old. when i bought it, i wanted a fast computer. it seems to have slowed down. i was wondering if there was a quick, relatively cheap way to boost speed?

Secondly, i have cable modem, and the lights on the "pc and receiving" sections of the modem are constantly blinking. Should they be constant? Maybe i have a poor signal?

thanks

The only real way I know of to speed up a dell is to format it and do a clean reinstall. They typically come preloaded with so much junk software that you will never use. Barring that, it's probably time to clean up your start list.

You can download a copy of "hijackthis" from www.download.com, run the program and save a log. Post the log here and peeps can help you out. DO NOT try to remove items yourself, it can do unexpected damage.

As for your modem, blinking send/receive buttons typically show there's activity across your connection. The WAN light on my router is almost solid due to the amount of activity hitting it on the outside. It could just mean that there's active software (like spyware) accessing or sending information to the internet.

Could be a virus too, that'll be shown in the hijackthis log.

You have too much junk installed.

I recommend a reformat and re-installation of the OS.

First, backup ANYTHING you even think you might need later on--pics, bookmarks, docs etc. Then, since its a Dell, you should have a restore disk. Insert disc--system should autostart installation. If not, leave disc in and restart to initialize restore disk.
