hardware question

I was doing some clean up maintenace on my computer and noticed a lot of dust on a ckt. card and was wondering what the function of the card is.
Its about 3x5 inches, has a fan and heat sink, and plugs into what i think, is a mother board. Is this the computer's processor? Also, can anyone describe what a hard drive looks like? I'm thinking if i'm going to muck around in the machine i should know what the components are.
thanks

Yep, likely video. Does the monitor plug into the back of it?

A hard drive is a small metal flat box looking thing, usually about 6" long by 4" wide, one inch or less thick. Hard drives are mounted in racks and connect to the motherboard with cables, usually flat wide ones.

Most video cards have heatsink/fans nowadays.

The CPU will have a fan for sure. If there is only one card with a fan it is the CPU. If there are two cards with fan one is CPU the other is video card.

Which ever card it is the dust should be blown off it.

not that it matters much, dust is dust and needs to go away. the video card is a card, and as such is not part of the motherboard. you should shut down, blow out the case, power supply, all boards. run with the case open to confirm that all cooling fans are functional. shut down, and close the case. always ground yourself or at least discharge any static buildup in your body.

Sorry for not replying sooner. I located the Video card by tracing the cable to the monitor(duh)! I also found the hard drive. Suggestions for maintenance upkeep is appreciated.

I think something 'going west'. occasionally the machine just shuts off.
I traced the problem to dust, reseating cards and cables. But now it shuts down randomly every couple of days.
Anyway,thats a issue for a another time.
Thanks to all again
