I still have GREAT love for floppy disk

Hi:
I am VERY glad you put this thread, above.
Because, I still have a GREAT inclinaltion for using floppy disks.

One very good reason is convenience when needed to transfer a small files, like
e-mail and word. CD is quite intimidating as to transfering a smallest things.
on the otherhand, floppy is VERY easy, ... first of all, I am very comfortable to
use it.

Cocerning web-site of floopy drive, ... since just $20.00 with free sh, then I
try to contact for purchasing one for a brand new computer/spare one for just
in case.

Thanks for posting this thread, 'old style floppy.'

Why not just use a USB thumb drive? They're faster, more reliable, hold infinitely more data, and you can buy them for next to nothing nowadays.

That being said, I still have a floppy drive in my computer - you know, just in case - but it's kind of like the VCR sitting next to my Tivo. Haven't used it in years.

I just purchased 'Memorex Floppy Drive' by Amazon Com.

Hi:
When I clicked one of web-sites, ... Memorex Floppy Disk/External at Amazon com.

I coundn't resist, .... then I just purchased it now, priced $42.99.
The price is very reasonable and I STILL love this, old-fashioned way to transfer
and read on Floppy Disk.

Like old gf or bf, ... once you fell in love, ... then it's VERY hard to get rid of that
feelings. Floopy Disk goes same way. But, again this is my view.

I understand everyone is different, then I respect others' opinion/view.

The Floppy

Yes i hope it never dissapears a floppy disc is cheap you don't have to worry about where you touch it like a CD..you can give them away but you couldn't give your USB thumb drive away cost to much
but a floppy is a great way for saving something without any software. To put something on a disc you need expensive CD burning software..just comparing o.k.

Yeah, but for the same price you can go from 1.38MB of storage to 512MB or 1GB of storage with a thumb drive, I just bought a new U3 compatible 1GB USB2 thumbdrive for $50, The U3 is pretty cool.

No floppy on my iMac

Yea ..so Apple dropped using them a while ago..?
I kind of miss it for sharing/moving small files too.
But hey, yes $50. buck for a USB thumbdrive sounds good too.

bought in bulk(100 pk) cd's can be had for around 5 cents apiece. cheaper than floppy, with huge advantage of space. floppy? 8 track? beta vision?

Floppy still quicker

Well i do not want to argue I hope I'll always have both options
Floppy & CD burner some computers don't have CD burner those that are older
you can run a CD but you cannot burn CD's without the software
That usually cost extra to add to your computer example a DVD-CD combo player
it needs the NERO sofware to burn CD's
What do you need for a floppy nothing

Can you buy a computer nowadays without, at the very least, a CD burner? I bought an HP computer for my home business that was about $400, and it came with a dual-layer DVD burner. In comparison, as was already said, I don't believe most new computers even come with a floppy drive installed anymore.

I expect you'll still be able to buy floppy drives and 3.5" discs for a few more years to come, just as you can still find other legacy equipment at computer shows and such. I wouldn't expect to be able to find the discs available at, say, Office Depot for too much longer, though.

Remember that the 5 1/4' floppy disc was very popular back in the 80's - you don't see it around much now, do you?

in 5 years owning a floppy drive will be like owning the only fax machine in the world.
you can make a copy but what are you going to do with it ?
floppys may have seen a rebirth in a smaller package but the flash memory killed that with one shot.
seen any slide rules lately ?

I haven't used a floppy in years. A thumb drive is so much more convenient - smaller size and holds a lot more.

CDs make great archival media. Don't have to worry about making them un-writable.

You do not need to buy cd burning software as adequate software comes with most burners anyway. Even operating systems have burning software built in.

My vcr has also sat unused for over a year.

Floppy is dead for general portable "Sneakernet" or personal file management on modern computer systems. Thumb drives have taken that over.

For physically sharing files, CD-Rs are generally cheaper than floppy, and CDR drives fast and universal enough on modern systems.

Sure, floppy drives still have a niche for older computers and OSes and advanced users that might need a floppy drive for RAID drivers or whatever.

There are several issues with thumb drives that will keep the floppy disc alive, at least for a while yet.

Not everyone has USB capabilities. I know many people still using older machines without USB capability at all, or people without an open USB connector. You can always unplug a USB device, but be careful what you unplug.

Some machines have USB ports that are not easily reached. Not all machines have front USB ports. If the back of the PC is not easily reached or seen it's hard to see where to put the thumb drive. Not everyone has USB hubs.

There is no guarantee what drive letter the thumb drive will be installed as. It won't necessarily have the same drive letter on each machine.

I havn't owned a floppy or zip disk in many many years. Even CD-rs are out. DVD-R's hold much much more and are compatable with my computer, my dvd player, and my car mp3 player. DVD-Rs will soon fade too now that high def dvd formats are emerging. If I was a fortune teller I would tell you those will also die once flash memory gets larger and cheaper.

I just got 'External USB Floppy Drive'

Hi:
In oppose to Amazon's e-mail which stated delivery takes more than
a week, however this evening(Eastern time, US) I received 'External
USB Floppy Drive.' It took a couple of days, very quick.

Its size is a bit larger than notepad and black in color. Very compact
and I hooked it up with one of three USBs in front of the compute
(hp pavillion a1310n, 3700+, 1.0 GB, 200 GB).
It works REALLY well. I love it!

If there are 'floppy-funs' on this board, I truly recommend this device.

I have not had a floppy drive on my computer for a couple of years now. However, I just can't bring myself to through out the couple hundred disk I have accumulated. I am such a pack rat. I do still have a couple of old machines that I can set up if I just have to have whatever info is on the floppies. I did manage to trash my 5-1/4 s.

The USB drives are so much faster and totally silent. Most can write 10-15 meg/sec, a floppy takes 30-45 seconds for just 1meg. I have also never had a USB not copy a file. I can’t tell you how many times I have copied files onto a floppy checked them to be sure they worked only to get to work or home and get a file error msg.

so i packed them into a couple of Jap orange boxes
I still go and check sometimes for certain files they always work
case or no case...I had them stored in my garage 40 below part of the winter
they worked fine afterwards

Depends on the thumb drive, a CD holds 700MB, you can get thumb drives from 16MB to 2GB and more.

Floppy means for smallest filies/folders

Hi:
I just forgot to mention in my previous post, ... in my case,
'Floppy' meant for smallest files/folders, like e-mail and words
which mistakenly came to my computer.

Rather printing or copying on CD, I use Floppy disk to transfer
those 'smallest' ones. One 'good' reason is very easy and
also quite comfortable for me to do.

In my early 20', there were ONLY Floopy available. In those
days, there was also a bigger one, like 5 and a half disk which
I didn't like, due to larger size. On the otherhand, the current
floppy I see one of local stores(I live in the Central part of East
Coast), there are many 'colorful' disks which I am able to distiguish
easily by color, ... like 'red' for 'e-mail' and 'blue' for 'word,' and
go on.

Then, in younger generation who are ONLY familiar with CDs and DVDs
probably not able comprehend what this, floppy means.

As for CD goes, I use for 'bigger files/folders' which floppy not able
to accomodate.

In my opinion, both CD and Floppy are VERY good commodities to
keep around the desk, both office and home.

Essentially Yes. Flash is specifically the memory chip technology used in "thumb" drives.

Not soon, now. As I said before, many laptop and desktop PC's are shipping without floppy drives.

Alternatives

I guess there is many alternatives to the floppy and it just isn't necessary to
pay for that extra stuff on your computer when you can use a CD DVD Flash memory
I do understand and no I do not want to pay for anything extra I do not need !
