Brother Printer Problem

I have a Brother HL-1440 Laser printer that always prints smudges on the first print job of the day. Everything after that first job prints fine unless the printer sits unused for a few hours.....then it'll repeat the problem again.

The toner and drum are not new but they aren't yet near the end of their service life. This is a home office printer, so, although it's used daily, I wouldn't consider it severe use like in an office setting.

I've tried all of the tips in the user guide like shaking the toner and cleaning the wire but none of that helps. In fact, the user guide doesn't mention anything about intermittent printing problems!
Any ideas,
Thanks,
Phil

I have HL 1660's at my office. They are not my favorite printer. Pull out the cartridige, above it is like mirror going the length of the printer about one inch wide. It is hard to see. Clean it with a dust cloth, the cloth should pickup a lot of black toner.
