disk defragmenting
Is it possible in windows xp to set disk defragment in the scheduled tasks to run at a certain time of day in certain intervals like every week or so. Perhaps a program of sorts exists that allows this. Thank you very much

windows xp differant
But windows xp is differant and much smarter O.S.
you can do maintenance outside of safemode works fine
i often boot into safemode a lot anyway and run a quick scan and defrag
and also run spybot ad-aware providing you got all your updates previously
outside of safemode...but yes I see this has a great deception for all those starting
out using a computer they get a old pent 111 or pent 11 and burden these old computers down with
printer software scanner software Norton antivirus to the point where they do not run so good

Your best bet is to make a small investment in Diskeeper. It can be set to schedule in various ways, including screen saver mode.

software not the issue
The issue is windows 98/SE would keep rewriting to the disc
and a defrag wouldn't be accomplished...this is why booting into safemode
would shut down a lot of systems that cause the disc to keep rewriting
and thus you could actually accomplish a defrag with windows 98/SE
