xp home sp2 missing start menu

my puter is running win xp home sp2 and when i start up i get to the desktop but there is no start menu or desktop icons. i can open task manager and run programs but cannot open taskbar or start menu.

when i go to control panel and click taskbar and start menu options it will not open application. I can not get systray.exe to work either.

kids said they were deleting program using norton clean sweep and when it asked for reboot this is what they got. you can change display options, settings etc but no start menu or taskbar.

how do i restore the taskbar and start menu? system restore was turned off so that is not an option. i can access recovery console from xp disk but have no idea on what commands to use.

please help. any suggestions would be appreciated. you think you finally are computer literate and then this happens and you realize you really dont know [email protected]$t.

thanks in advance

Does it appear if you boot up in safe mode? For most machines you tap F8 at boot up to get into safe mode.
Do you happen to have both onboard and added video card? If so, one needs to be disabled in BIOS and this causes this problem.

Try this, if it works or not

Hi:
I have no idea how serious the problem you got.
However, the following site might help you.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Then, look at :
(1) #261 List of Startup Programs Running at Login

(2) #Start Menu = Enable

And, there are many, many good Tweaks you can find.

Good Luck,

when they used norton did they make a backup first? see if you can restore from norton, or even the recycle bin.

I'm VERY happy you got!!

Hi:
I am REALLY happy you got the lost program.

I had a similar problem, ... lost 'Search Engine,' then
I understand your position.

Please keep that web-site in handy, ... just in case.

Glad we, both got a benefit from that web-site.

I think the author's name is : Kelly (I can't remember
her last name. ) She's one of best persons in the computer)
