"Find Files and Folders" function not finding files

I use Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and when I open the Start Menu and go to Search and highlight Find files and Folders, and I type

the name of the file that I try to search for on my computer and click Search, I get a popup window that says, "Unexpected error. Action

could not be completed."

If anyone could help me resolve this problem, I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Here are two possibilities for you:
  • You disconnected an external drive from the system simply by unplugging it after the system started. The system tries to access a device that it knows about, but doesn't work or isn't there.
  • The search starts and after a pause produces the message. There might really be a file system error on the last searched drive in this case.
