controller not working for pc

Hello. I have a microsoft sidewinder precision pro joystick i got off a friend that i would like to install on my computer. In the book it says that it is designed for windows 98. I have windows xp media center edition version 2. when i attempt to install the software an error message comes up and says sidewinder game device software 3.x installs drivers that aren't compatible with this version of windows. Is there any way i can make it work with my computer. If there is how. When it comes to computers i'm dumb so if there is a way i would have to be walked through it.

The simple answer is you need to find a driver for that joystick that is made for Windows XP. I could not find any Sidewinder driver / software released by Microsoft for XP. It looks like they stopped all support before Windows 2000 or XP were released. I could not find any specific drivers for XP but did some other methods you could try.

First, make sure you update your Direct X to the latest version.

Here is a discussion about installing a sidewinder in XP.

Basically it says to use the built in game controller drivers and manually add the controller. Goto the start menu, open the control panel, goto Game Controllers / Gaming Options. Click add, choose Microsoft Sidewinder (Auto-detect) From searching, some people say it is more likely to work if you connect the controller to USB and not the MIDI port.

The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end..."
